How to make a shooter game with AI

Shooters are fast to prototype with AI: move, aim, fire, dodge. A classic space shooter or top-down arena makes a great first project. You don't need coding skills. Paste a prompt into an AI coding tool such as Claude, Cursor, Bolt or ChatGPT, and it builds a game you can play right in your browser.

What makes a shooter feel good is feedback: a little screen shake, a flash when you hit something, enemies that come in waves. Ask for those by name and the game will feel much better on the first try.

How to do it in 3 steps

  1. Copy the Starter recipe. Tap Copy below to grab the full recipe.
  2. Paste it into an AI tool. Paste it into a fresh project. Ask for one HTML file if you want to run it locally.
  3. Play a round, then add juice. Ask for screen shake, hit flashes and a sound when enemies pop. Small changes, big difference.

Build a small, playable browser game inspired by "Banished" (Shooter).
Concept: 6 DoF arena shooter w/ generated art, sound, & music. Built with HL2's Hammer level editor.
Tone/hook (from the game's own page): In the future there are those who illegally alter robots to do THEIR bidding. Lawful mercenaries are dispatched to eliminate these modders & bring order to their chaos.
Tech: use PlayCanvas; keep it to a single page that loads instantly with no login or install.
Controls: touch controls (tap/drag) that work on a phone plus keyboard and mouse on desktop, shown on a short how-to-play screen.
Multiplayer: the original is listed as multiplayer. Start with a local or bot opponent, then add online play (e.g. WebSockets) once the core loop is fun.
Core loop: include levels, stages or waves that ramp up.
Audio: add simple sound effects and music (start audio on the first click/tap).
Steps: 1) get the core mechanic playable with placeholder shapes, 2) add win/lose conditions and restart, 3) polish feel, visuals and sound, 4) add your own twist (setting, character or one new rule).
Make it your own: don't copy the original's name, art, text or code.

Heads up: Starter recipes are learning templates written by Vibe1Up, not the creator's own prompt.

FAQ

What kind of shooter is easiest to build first?
A top-down or side-scrolling 2D shooter. It needs no 3D models and the controls are easy to describe.
My game slows down when lots of enemies appear. What do I do?
Tell the AI it's lagging with many enemies and ask it to reuse bullets and enemies instead of creating new ones.
How do I make it playable on a phone?
Ask for a virtual joystick on one side of the screen and auto-fire, then test on your phone early.
